William Nicholas DeCarlis was born and raised in upstate New York but has been a resident of Gainesville since the late 1960s when he moved here to attend the University of Florida College of Law. Prior to that period he was an Aeronautical Engineer with NASA – working on many rockets, including Apollo 7 through Apollo 17. After some time Bill found his heart was in law which led him to give up his engineering profession and start anew as a law student despite having a wife and young son. He graduated from law school and became a member of the Florida Bar in 1972, started trying cases and never looked back.

He was originally with the firm of Bates & DeCarlis but soon opened his own practice of William N. DeCarlis, P.A. He remained a sole practitioner for over 15 years and then became partners with James Michael Sawyer in the firm of DeCarlis and Sawyer in 1994. In January 2009, the firm became DeCarlis & Sawyer, with the addition of Gil Alba as a third partner.

Bill has devoted his practice to representing individuals accused of criminal activity for over 30 years. His successes at trial have included some of the highest profile cases in the North Florida area over the last 25 years. He has been recognized as one of the best attorneys in the area by his peers. Currently his practice continues to focus on selective cases where clients rely on his extensive experience and success at trial.

When he is not working on criminal defense cases, he enjoys fly fishing and traveling to locations known for their great fly fishing. He is also a loyal Gator fan.
